Horváth Economy

We started farming in 1993. Our farm has been constantly expanding. We currently farm 300 ha, a large part of which is our own land. Until 2018, we practiced conventional farming, which means that we did the traditional ploughing, with a lot of tillage and soil destruction. In 2014, we acquired an area that broke this practice and started us on the path towards shallow tillage systems. Since the shallow tillage system was working there, we stopped ploughing our land in 2018 and gradually built up our soils. We incorporated cover crops into our cropping structure. Gradually, we have reduced the amount of tillage. We upgraded our machinery so that we had direct seeding equipment. We tried to direct drill the second crops. This technology requires much more attention and precision in terms of equipment and timing.

Our weather is becoming more and more unpredictable, our climate is changing, so WE have to change too. We read a lot of videos and scientific articles to get an insight into how this system works. We were at the first TMG event in Hungary, where we made a lot of contacts and got confirmation that this is the direction we want to take in our farming. We had a lot of fear and doubt, but we saw that it works for others. Building our farms with less iron and using nature instead was the direction we chose. And in the year 2024, we took the plunge: we switched to a no-till farming system.
